Rome bans fireworks on New Year's Eve

Rome bans firecrackers and bangers over New Year.

Rome has banned the use of firecrackers, bangers, rockets and other explosive material from 00.01 on 31 December 2023 until midnight on 6 January 2024.

Those who fail to comply with the New Year legislation, signed by the city's mayor Roberto Gualtieri, risk fines of up to €500.

The ban on petardi and botti, which covers the entire area of Rome, excludes the use of safer and less noisy fireworks.

The ban has been in place for a number of years in Rome over the New Year period but tends to be widely flouted.

The city says the order is in place for people's safety, particularly children, as well as to avoid negative effects on pets, air pollution and damage to the city's archaeological heritage.

The capital is set to hold its official fireworks display over the Circus Maximus as part of the Roma 2024. You are here free concert.
