Labiche created the work in 1860, shining the spotlight on the vices, whims and peculiarities of the bourgoisie of his time. The story centres on the Perrichon family about to set out on holiday, and Martino says she has dusted off the out-dated details and given the Perrichons cutting contemporary traits in which we will most probably recognise ourselves.
