In a mixed programme known simply as “Ailey II”, this is the youthful second company of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. It is renowned for merging the spirit and energy of best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s emerging choreographers. Founded in 1974, the company embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programmes. The mixed bill drawn up by new director Troy Powell and presented by the touring company ends with the justly acclaimed closer, Alvin Ailey’s own 1960 piece Revelations. Danced to African-American spiritual music, it puts into beautifully-executed movement the cultural, political and religious history of black America. It’s brave, powerful and breathtaking.
