From 5-9 June the Italian capital hosts the UITP World Congress and Exhibition, bringing together leading players in the public transport sector from around the world. The International Union of Public Transport (www.uitp.com) was founded in the late 1800s and boasts a membership of some 2,000 public transport policy-makers, operators and suppliers from 80 countries. The event in Rome is an opportunity to share information about trends in urban public transport, from the latest technologies to the problems posed by over-population and environmental pollution. One of the highlights of the congress will be the results of the UITPs most recent survey of urban mobility and policy responses. Special sessions will look at improving the cost-efficiency of bus services, the opportunities and constraints of light rail, and new technologies for underground systems.
