Bridge collapses in Rome

Nobody injuried in accident caused by truck

The Via Flaminia in north Rome has reopened to traffic following the collapse of a pedestrian bridge on top of a truck on the evening of 24 July. The incident took place outside the RAI production centre at Saxa Rubra and led to heavy traffic jams and bus diversions until late into the night.

The acccident is believed to have been caused by the heavy vehicle after a digger it was transporting caught the bottom of the bridge, breaking it in two.

The driver escaped unscathed as the bridge fell behind the truck's cabin, and there was nobody on the bridge at the time of the accident which occurred during rush hour on one of Rome's busiest roads.
