His works exist for themselves rather than for expressive content. He has eliminated dependence on music by allowing the dance to coexist with the sound and developed chance choreography which avoids usual or expected movement sequences. However his vision is imbued with a sense of humour and an open point of view and he has been a major influence on the avant-garde. In his relentless search for growth, Cunningham has also choreographed dances for spaces outside the theatre, collaborated on a variety of film dances and video dances, and has been instrumental in the development of computer programmes for dance.
