18 Nov 2006. In VSPRS, choreography by Alain Platel. This is the Flemish choreographers most recent creation for his excellent company and it is provoking conflicting reviews by dance critics. The performance explores the interface of dance and the twitches and tics of the mentally disturbed and was inspired by a 1904 film on asylum inmates. Platel, who has set the piece to a fractured version of Monteverdis Maria Vespers, also draws a link between mania and the extremes of religious observance. The result is disturbing, with flashes of brilliance, but VSPRS sprawls indulgently, and often spills over into freak-tent voyeurism.
