Portus project in Ostia uncovers new treasures
A team of archeologists from Southampton University in the UK have uncovered the remains of an amphitheatre at the site of Portus, in Ostia, near Fiumicino. Using magnetic sensors, ground radar and metal probes, the Southampton team, assisted by Cambridge University and the British School at Rome, found the curved walls of an amphitheatre similar in ground area to the Pantheon in Rome.
Previous excavations overlooked the evidence at the ancient maritime gateway to Imperial Rome. Project director, professor Simon Keay, explained that,
