Star Ukrainian violinist Victoria Mullova teamed up with her husband, cellist Matthew Barley and his jazz music ensemble, to record an album entitled The Peasant Girl, which she presents in the Rome concert with the rest of the group.
The music in this eclectic programme reflects the deep influence of gypsy music on both classical music and jazz in the 20th century. It features music by classical composers Bartok and Kodaly alongside selections from the world of jazz, including John Lewis’s “Django” and tracks by the band Weather Report. All of this music has strong connections for Mullova whose family lived off the land in a small village only two generation ago.
