Originally commissioned by Berlin's House of World Cultures, Qing Tan ( Sigh) is a one-woman opera performed by the Chinese actress Tian Mansha, and tells three individual stories based upon the lives of three generations of artistic women. Mansha, who is also a director and teacher at the Opera Academy in Sichuan as well as a teacher at the Theatre Academy in Shanghai, has twice won China's highest accolade for drama, the Plum Blossom Prize. She is acclaimed for her interpretations of classical Sichuan Opera and for her ability to piece together concrete and abstract images to create a complex mosaic.
