23 Sept-2 Dec 2009. This arts festival still feels like the most modern and cutting-edge event in Rome, even though, incredibly it seems, it has been around for almost a quarter of a century. Romaeuropa took its first brave steps back in 1985, bringing avant-garde theatre directors such as Peter Sellars and Robert Wilson, contemporary electronic music and lots of daring dance to Rome for the very first time. It was obviously what Romans wanted because every single edition has been a cultural and a box office success despite quite a few dubious productions and some iconoclastic programme choices. The festival is really the brainchild of the French Academy and former festival director Monique Veaute, and one of the keys to its continuing success is probably the fact that it has managed to spread its net and now relies on cooperation by important cultural institutions such as Universit
