6 Dec-22 Jan 2005. Many theatregoers will have already seen the traditional Irish version of John Synges Playboy Of The Western World with its hilarious tale of a young man who claims to have murdered his father thus becoming the envy of all the men of the village and desired by all of the women. Transfer this humorous tale, that so scandalised well-to-do Ireland when it was first performed, to a sleepy village called Mayaro in Trinidad and you have an unusual mix but with equally hilarious consequences. The original play by Synge has been rewritten and adapted by Mustapha Matura and the director is Nicholas Kent. Playboy of the West Indies received its world premiere at the Tricycle in 1984. It has subsequently received more than 20 productions worldwide. It returned to the Tricycle in 1994 with great success, and has been televised for the BBC. This is its 20th anniversary production.
