Germanys Christmas markets are famous the world over and Berlins Opernpalais Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the capitals most beautiful with more than 120 stalls (Stnde) set right in the historic centre. The market is replete with traditional German arts and crafts, carousels, ideas for presents and souvenirs and also features a wide-ranging cultural programme. Offering visitors a chance to leave the stress and hectic life of the city behind, traditional songs and recitals recall old-time German customs and folklore over modern gadgets. The music programme takes place daily on two stages and features Christmas concerts by Tyrolean, Russian and regional German performers recreating a romantic Christmas feeling. Food and drink are a major part of the experience with steaming hot, spicy Glhwein (mulled wine) a must, likewise the tasty Liebkchen (ginger bread biscuits). For those who like it a little bit louder and modern there is another big Christmas market on the Alexanderplatz with roller coasters and a party atmosphere that is principally aimed at younger generations.
