6-17 June 2006. Conducted by Bruno Bartoletti, directed by Liliana Cavani, with Leo Nucci and Sylvie Valayre.
At the Regio di Parma the Giuseppe Verdi festival closes with Macbeth (8-17 June 2006). The protagonist will be played by celebrated baritone Leo Nucci, without doubt one of the most respected interpreters of Verdi particularly in this role, which he played in an interesting film by Claude DAnna alongside Shirley Verrett. In this production his partner will be Sylvie Valayre, who is well known in Italy (above all at Veronas Arena where she returns almost every year) and has interpreted Lady Macbeth on numerous occasions. Orchestra conductor Bruno Bartoletti and director Liliana Cavani also need no introduction. Two years ago, also in Parma, they worked together to stage a splendid Alceste by Gluck. Bruno Bartoletti will also be the protagonist in a concert (12 June) somewhat outside the festival theme presenting music by Mozart and Strauss. Strausss fascinating and consuming Vier Letzte Lieder will be sung by Barbara Frittoli, one of Muti and Abbados favourite sopranos, who has now launched an international career that has taken her as far as the Metropolitan in New York. The other scheduled concert will display the talents of the prestigious New York Philharmonic and another authoritative conductor, Lorin Maazel (16 June). The programme in this case is more in keeping with the festival, since it presents some Verdi symphonies along with famous arias from operas sung by Mariella Devia, a soprano with a boisterous technique whose performances are always greeted with uncontainable excitement.
