22 March: By Hugo Van Hofmannstahl, with Toni Servillo actor, and Antonio Ballistapiano. Theatrical performance of The Letter of Lord Chandos, a fictional letter of 1603 written to the English philosopher Francis Bacon by Philip, Lord Chandos, explaining why he has had to give up writing. Written in the Austro-Hungarian empire at the turn of the century and seen as a commentary on the fragmentation of contemporary life, some critics claim the work shaped the literature of the 20th century.
