31 Jan-18 Feb. Teatro Eliseo presents an Italian-language adaptation of Lampedusa by British playwright Anders Lustgarten. The hard-hitting tale focuses on mass migration, contrasting the life of Stefano, a Sicilian fisherman who earns his living by recovering the bodies of drowned refugees, with that of Denise, an Italian Moroccan student, a second-generation immigrant who funds her education by working as a debt collector for a loan company. The play's themes veer from poverty and despair to survival and hope.
The original version of the play, staged in London, was described by The Guardian in 2015 as "a brave excursion into the dark waters of mass migration." The Rome production is translated by Elena Battista, starring Donatella Finocchiaro and Fabio Troiano. For details see Teatro Eliseo website.
