Italian diplomacy in the face of the Holocaust

Solo il dovere, oltre il dovere – La diplomazia italiana di fronte alla persecuzione degli ebrei (1938-1943).

28 Jan-14 July. An exhibition in Rome highlights the reaction of Italian diplomats in the face of the persecution of Italian and European Jews between the years 1938 and 1943.

Hosted at the Fondazione Museo della Shoah in Rome's Jewish Ghetto district, the exhibition has been organised in collaboration with Italy's ministry of foreign affairs.

Through photographs, documents, films, maps and newspaper articles, the exhibition reconstructs a tragic era, beginning with changes that occurred within the ministry of foreign affairs and its foreign network following the promulgation of Italy's racial laws in 1938.

Much of the important historical material on display comes from the foreign ministry's diplomatic archives and, for the large part, has never been published.

The exhibition highlights the efforts of diplomats to save Italian Jews residing abroad, reconstructing some of the most significant stories, both of the diplomats and of those persecuted.

There is free entry to the exhibition which is open Sun-Thurs 10.00-17.00 and Fri 10.00-13.00. For full details see Museo della Shoah website.
