Madrids Plaza de la Puerta del Sol is the pumping heart of the city and one of the most popular nightlife spots in the Spanish capital at the best of times with innumerable bars, restaurants and pubs as well as plenty of shopping opportunities during the daytime. On New Years Eve, it is the place to be for nocturnal animals intent on indulging in Spanish folklore, fun and festivities. Spanish and international celebrities usually make an appearance on Madrids central square and home to the town hall and its cathedral. Essential items to take with you are a bottle of champers and a bag of grapes for the main event. As the central clock approaches midnight on 31 December, the locals countdown the year in unison, then commence a bout of serious grape munching one for each toll of the bells (12 in total) that is supposed to ensure a sweet and prosperous year ahead. It is hectic, colourful and the prices take a noticeable leap for the occasion, but New Years Eve on Puerta del Sol is a must if you are in Madrid this Christmas season.
