With football very much Spains national sport, it may come as a surprise to some to learn that the 2004 Barcelona Sevens Tournament was a huge success. Taking place at the Complex Esportiu Municipal Mar Bella, home of Poble Nou Enginyers Rugby Club, twenty-four teams representing 9 nations competed (getting at least 3 games each), playing over 13 hours of sevens rugby, the high-speed, 7-man game that is ever more popular since it became an international event in 1993. But the Barcelona Sevens is a sporting fiesta that offers a little something extra for the public - some serious drinking among the crowd (1,000 litres of beer) and an all-night disco for after hours. Players get a goody bag with a commemorative T-shirt, programme, food and drink vouchers and free entry to the Boveda disco club in the evening.
