The following article was the last one written by Derek Wilson, about 10 days before he died in San Giovanni hospital in Rome on 17 March. The paper magazine of Wanted in Rome was already at the printers and therefore we were unable to add a last-minute dedication to Derek in the text. During his last days in hospital he talked with all the friends who went to see him about his article, with a characteristic twinkle in his eye. He, more than anyone, would have loved the idea that this piece was published after his death.
The 4 April paper edition of Wanted in Rome will carry tributes to Derek and his work. Anyone wishing to remember him on this website or in print can send a contribution to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If, unfortunately, some relative expires in Rome, and had expressed the wish to be cremated, the quickest way to commit the defunct to the flames is to call in the city
