16-17 June 2006. In Dido & Aeneas, choreography by Sasha Waltz. Waltz, who was born 1963 in Karlsruhe, is one of the most outstanding choreographers in Germany. She studied at the school for New Dance Development in Amsterdam before working in New York. Then she joined with Jochen Sandig to form the dance ensemble Sasha Waltz & Guests. Its first work was Travalogue Trilogy in 1993. She now works independently with her Compagnie Sasha Waltz & Guests in Berlin. Waltzs work merges abstract American-based post-modern dance with narrative, episodic physical theatre. Purcells opera Dido & Aeneas was her first opera produced in conjunction with the Akademie fr Alte Musik at Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Hers is a lighthearted and unusual vision of the well-known story of two lovers, separated by an evil spirit.
