10-14 May 2006. In Dal Faust di Goethe, choreography by Wayne Eagling. Since leaving the Dutch National Ballet in 2003, Eagling has been freelancing as a choreographer and coach around the world. This experience has done nothing to change his concern about the lack of originality in the international ballet repertoire, and the dearth of new works. He commends companies which commission new full-length works regularly. Most directors will not do this, he says, because the financial risks are too great and if there is a failure, they will get the blame. They are looking for success, and its easier to get a success with old ballets, which kind of guarantee youre not going to be accused of making a terrible mistake.
