The ballet employs a non-vocal setting of Georges Bizets famous score the arias are all there, except theyre given instrumental rather than vocal life. It focuses on the four principals the fiery gypsy woman Carmen; Don Jose, the soldier who becomes smitten by her; Don Joses would-be fianc Micaela; and Escamillo, the arrogant but virile toreador to whom Carmen is also attracted. According to Amodio the real challenge for the dancers is not so much technical, as the capacity to bring out the nuances of the characters.
