The company was founded in 1968 to respond to the needs of the largest opera theatre in Latin Americas biggest city. It has since gained in professionalism and autonomy, and in 1974, the director Antonio Carlos Cardoso moulded the corps de ballet to reflect the many different cultures and colours of Brazil, employing dancers with diverse backgrounds. Thus the main characteristics of the ensemble are its technical and interpretative plurality and a repertory made up of different styles, from neoclassical to traditional to contemporary dance.
