Rome opens Baths of Caracalla at night

Visit Baths of Caracalla by the light of the moon.

Rome's majestic Baths of Caracalla will open to visitors on nine special evenings from 14 September until 26 October, the city announced on Tuesday.

Organised by the special superintendence of Rome, the visits include areas of the baths complex normally inaccessible to the public, as well as the ongoing exhibition of photographs by Letizia Battaglia.

The offer includes two different ways of visiting: a walk around the underground levels and the Mithraeum without a guide, for €8 (on 14, 28 Sept, 26 Oct), or a guided tour for €20 that also includes the gymnasiums, natatio, frigidarium and mosaics (21, 30 Sept and 5, 12, 19, 20 Oct).

Rome archaeological superintendent Daniela Porro said the annual initiative allows visitors to experience "the charm of the most important imperial baths complex" at dusk and by night, describing it as "a unique opportunity to access the monument beyond the usual opening hours".

During the special openings the site will stay open from 20.00 to 22.00, with visits divided into time slots every 15 minutes, from 20.15 to 21.45, for a maximum of 30 people at a time.
