Those interested in the papal sartorial details should quickly make a visit to the premises of Annibale Gammarelli, the papal tailors, 34 Via di S. Chiara, near the church of S. Maria sopra Minerva.

Three sets of vestments, small, medium and large, are on display, one of which will be donned by the newly-elected pope when he makes his first appearance on the balcony of the Basilica of St Peters.

The papal outfit for this important occasion consists of a white woollen sottana (soutane) and of a sort of overcoat in silk moir, also white, a mozzetta (a sort of short cape) in scarlet silk, and the white papal berretta (biretta).

Gammarelli have been tailors to the popes since 1875.
