Stone block falls off Aurelian Walls in central Rome
Chunk of tufa rock fell off arches in S. Giovanni area of Rome.
Rome police have sealed off a 30-m stretch of the city's Aurelian Walls after a 50-cm block of tufa rock became dislodged from the ancient structure in the S. Giovanni district of the capital.
There were no injuries in the incident which occurred over the arches between Piazza di Porta S. Giovanni and Piazzale Appio.
Firefighters are at the scene and three of the arches are currently closed to traffic and pedestrians.
The incident took place at around 10.00 on 3 September following torrential rain the previous evening.
