Major expansion for Rome's Campus Bio-Medico University

Rome university and medical centre presents masterplan.

The Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, in the Trigoria area south of the capital, is to undergo a major expansion thanks to a €200 million investment.

The private university and medical facility, which promotes integrated teaching, research and healthcare, will increase its campus site from its current 24 hectares to 90, more than doubling the overall space of its facilities to 186,00 sqm.

Under the investment plan Campus Bio-Medico will increase its annual number of in-patients from 13,500 to 20,000, while its number of medical students will rise from 2,000 to 5,000.

It will also add an additional 100 hospital beds, bringing the total number to 400, and increase the number of out-patients at its clinics from 780,000 to one million.

Surrounded by the Decima Malafede nature reserve, Campus Bio-Medico was inugurated in 1993 following the idea of Bishop Álvaro del Portillo, then prelate of the conservative Catholic organisation Opus Dei, to establish a university clinic guided by the Christian spirit of service.

The current rector Professor Raffaele Calabrò told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that "it would be wrong to talk about an 'Opus Dei university'", as it is a private business owned by Campus Bio-Medico Spa, however it remains guided by that "spirit of service."
