The city council modern art gallery, MACRO, is to open for a token entrance fee of 1 for the next two years. Danilo Eccher, who has been director of the gallery for the past two years, hopes to see the rebuilding of the gallery, designed by Odile Decq, completed by 2006. Eccher wants the gallery to be a meeting place where the work of established and new artists can be seen in two or three exhibitions on show simultaneously and where lectures and meetings with artists can be arranged. A recent innovation at MACRO is the video collection. The gallery hopes to bring together all the video art produced since the 1960s, and to begin to produce video art on the premises. In the meantime the existing collection of video art, stored in the basement of the gallery, is available to the public on the first Wednesday of every month.
