Freak tornado hits Rome beach

Dozen people injured at Ostia beach on Rome coast.

Around a dozen people were treated for injuries after a freak tornado caught beach-goers offguard on Rome's south-western coastline at lunchtime on Sunday 16 July.

The incident, which hit a section of beach along Lungomare Amerigo Vespucci in the Ostia suburb, sent umbrellas and sunbeds up to 400m into the air, according to witnesses.

Paramedics treated beach-goers at the scene and six people were taken to hospital although no serious injuries were reported.
