Italians can now compare prices at their local grocers and supermarkets against national standards using a new, free text messaging service organized by the ministry of agriculture together with consumer groups and Italian food and agricultural think-tank ISMEA (Istituto di Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo Alimentare). The service provides information on gross and retail prices for over 84 food products.

To use the service, send an SMS to the toll-free number 47947 with the name of the product as it appears on the label. The response is instantaneous and free of charge and gives the wholesale price of the product and its retail prices in the north, centre and south of Italy.
