This is the production of Giselle that Deane staged for the English National Ballet after he became director of the company in 1993. It ignores the works traditional mediaeval Rhineland setting in favour of 1920s Austria. If Deanes first scene falls short of expectations, his second act achieves an impressive union of dramatic conviction and stylistic integrity.
