The festival, in Puccinis birthplace near Lucca, opened with an extraordinary early celebrative performance of Madama Butterfly on the exact date of its centenary with stage direction by Vivien Hewitt and sets created by Ken Yasuda. Butterfly is back for the normal run of the festival, followed by Tosca and Turandot.
