Pope Francis will become the subject of a movie directed by fellow Argentine Alejandro Agresti, according to reports in Variety magazine.
The biopic titled Historia de un Cura (A Priest's Tale) will star Rodrigo de la Serna, best known for his portrayal of Alberto Granado, the companion of Ernesto “Che” Guevara in the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries. The Argentine actor will play the part of the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, elected Pope Francis in March.
The film will tell the pontiff's story through a mixture of flashbacks and flash-forwards as Cardinal Bergoglio flies to Rome for the papal conclave following Pope Benedict's resignation in February.
Director of the 2006 film The Lake House starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, Agresti told Variety that his latest film is aimed at "getting inside this very singular person."
The movie will be shot in Argentina, Italy and Germany, and will be filmed in a combination of Spanish and Italian. It is not known when it will be released in cinemas.
