Oldest known frescoes of apostles found in Rome catacomb
Archaeologists and restorers working in a little-known catacomb in south Rome have uncovered what they say are the oldest known paintings of the apostles Peter, Paul, Andrew and John. The four full-face icons are datable to the second half of the fourth century AD.
The images, in red, yellow, pink and blue, are on the ceiling of a burial chamber belonging to an ancient Roman noblewoman in the St Tecla catacombs on Via Silvio D
