The Policlinico Casilino in the eastern suburbs of Rome has started up a new service in answer to the increasing number of newborn babies abandoned in the city each year. The number of babies born outside hospitals and then abandoned in 2005 was 84 (up from 53 in 2004), and the Policlinico is often the place chosen by desperate parents to leave unwanted newborns.
