Flying Dutchmen: Andr Gingras, Conny Janssen Danst, Raz. 6-7 Nov 2004. For Romaeuropa Festival, In CYP 17, choreography by Andr Gingras, Album Familiar, choreography by Conny Janssen, and Zambracca casa del sogno, choreography by Hans Tuerling. A mix of protagonists and styles that attempts to represent the Dutch dance scene that combines an excellent academic tradition with experimentation and research. CYP 17 by Andr Gingras is a dance and video performance that sketches out an absurd but credible tragi-comic scenario of what our lives could be like after extensive genetic manipulation. The Canadian-born choreographer worked with Christopher Gillis, Doug Varone, Mariko Tanabe and the Doris Humphrey Repertory before he set foot in Europe in 1996 with the productions of Robert Wilson and started his Dutch co-operation with Arthur Rosenfeld, Onafhankelijk Toneel, and Min Tanaka. Gingras breakthrough came with the premire of CYP17 and with his collaboration with video artist Fabio Iaquone and playwright Sue Jane Stoker. In contrast, Conny Janssen Dansts Album Familiar presents an intuitive, delicately-ironic vision. The work represents the meeting of three women and four men in front of a portrait gallery: the framed images evoke personal memories and family stories, accompanied by music from mediaeval melodies to the tango of Carlos Gardel revealing the secrets and desires of each character on stage. Raz is a company founded by Hans Tuerlings in search of a new body language, and the work Zambracca, in various parts, is a combination of writing, dance and art. This most recent episode is inspired by the decadent poet Gabriele dAnnunzios house on the Lake Garda.
