In TeZukA, choreography by Cherkaoui. This latest work by the acclaimed choreographer from Belgium and Morocco is inspired by Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy) and all things manga. With a cast of nine dancers, two musicians, an actor and a calligrapher, plus projections by video artist Taki Ueda, Cherkaoui brings Tezuka's drawings to life. The story is only one aspect of this multimedia piece, which is strong on design and imagery, much of it related to paper, writing, drawing and ink. The dancers paint each other with letters and move like brushstrokes. Scrolls unfurl from the ceiling, on to which are projected animated columns of calligraphy; or they're rolled out like parchment pathways, paper trails for the characters to follow.
