Tuscany hit by 4.8-magnitude earthquake

No casualties reported in earthquake near Florence.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Italy, north of Florence, at 04.37 on the morning of Monday 9 December.

There were no injuries reported due to the earthquake whose epicentre was in Barberini in Mugello and was followed by several aftershocks.

The quake was felt strongly in Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Empoli as well as further afield in Siena and Pisa.

The tremor led to widespread delays and cancellations to train services to allow for the examination of tracks and rail infrastructure, as required when Italy registers earthquakes of more than a magnitude of 4.
