Tourists caught carving name into Leaning Tower of Pisa

American tourists carved name "Jeffy" into landmark monument.

Two American brothers, both medical doctors, were arrested for carving one of their names into the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which dates to the 12th century.

The tourists, aged 35 and 38, used a coin to carve the name "Jeffy" into the marble tower before posing for a selfie.

The actions of the brothers were spotted however by another tourist who alerted a security guard.

The brothers, who were on holiday in Tuscany, attempted to justify themselves to carabinieri by claiming they didn't believe their behaviour was "serious" as they had seen other names carved into the tower.

The tourists now face charges of aggravated damage to a building of historic and cultural importance.
