Rome gets new government team

Rome to be governed by expert civil servants.

Rome's prefect Franco Gabrielli has named six sub-commissioners to assist the city's newly-appointed commissioner Francesco Paolo Tronca, who replaced the ex-mayor Ignazio Marino on 1 November.

Five of the new commissioners come from the ministry of the interior and one from the public accounts office in the ministry of economy and finance.

Two of the sub-commissioners worked directly with Tronca during his recent Expo Milano experience in Milan. The two appointed from Rome's prefecture have expertise in dealing with the public and emergency services. Another has experience of the mafia in Reggio Calabria and the sixth in economy and finance.

No-one from the city government under the ex-mayor Ignazio Marino has been included, not even the ex-councillor for legal affairs Alfonso Sabella who did much to unearth the malfunctioning of the city services when he joined Marino's team in December 2014 on the outbreak of the Mafia Capitale case.

The appointments come a month before the opening of Pope Francis' special Jubilee Year of Mercy and on the eve of the opening of the Mafia Capitale trial in Rome.
