26 Aug-5 Sept 2010. Founded in 1968 to promote the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the upper Tiber valley, this festival has a different guest country every year. This year the spotlight is on Russia with a wide-ranging programme focusing on three main themes: the relationship between Russia and Italy during the 18th century when Peter the Great consolidated his empire and St Petersburg became a cultural reference point for Europe; Russian music during the 19th century when entire generations of composers contributed to the creation of a Russian national identity; and the political and social revolutions of the 20th century as expressed in music by Russian composers such as Stravinsky. Names to look out for include the Moscow Soloists conducted by Yuri Bashmet, pianist Arcadi Volodos, the Borodin Quartet, Misha and Lily Maisky, pianist Ivo Pogorelich and many others.
