Rome remembers victims of Florida massacre

Candlelit service at Colosseum for victims of gay Orlando nightclub shooting.

Rome residents and members of the city's LGBT community gathered by the Colosseum on the night of 12 June to remember the 50 victims of the massacre at a gay nightclub in Florida in the early hours of that morning.

The candlelit ceremony, which took place the day after Rome's Gay Pride parade, was held to commemorate the victims of the deadliest mass shooting in US history, an attack described by American president Barack Obama as "an act of terror and an act of hate."

The Rome vigil took place at the Colosseum-end of Via S. Giovanni in Laterano, known as "Gay Street", and similar events are planned in Milan and Naples on 13 June.

The governor of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti, took to Twitter to express his sorrow for the victims of a "tragedy that affects everyone."
