Rome remembers September 11.

There will be a multi-religious demonstration in Rome's Piazza del Campidoglio on Saturday 11 September at 20.30 in memory of the innocent victims of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York in 2001. The event is being organised by the Rome city council together with Legambiente, an Italian ecological watchdog, and the community of S.Egidio, the Catholic peace and relief organisation. It will be attended by leading figures from the Roman Catholic, Jewish and Muslim communities in the city. During the evening there will be a showing of a pop cartoon "Pace of Peace" which was produced by Israeli and Palestinian students.

Omar Camiletti, a representative of the moderate Islamic community in Rome and a leading figure at the city's main mosque has called for as many moderate Muslims as possible to attend the demonstration, in order to show the difference between terrorism and Islam. Muslims make up the second largest religious group in Italy with more than a million faithful.

On Saturday afternoon another demonstration is scheduled in Rome's Piazza della Repubblica against the United States invasion and occupation of Iraq.
