The appearance of two big boats on the Tiber, one with eight residential suites and the other with three decks, resembling a Mississippi steamboat, has drawn the attention of the city council to the need for a proper plan for the river. Both the new boats have a licence issued by the local port authorities to receive the public, which can mean anything from being a bar to a hotel. Now the council must decide on specific areas that can be used for moorings and rules for boat owners in case the river rises to dangerous levels, as it has in the past few months.

The Tiber already has moorings used by the many sports clubs along the river, a boat night club Baja and a few old vessels that were once river bathing establishments and are now used by Romans who go there to relax in summer.
