Repentant tourist sends stolen cobblestone back to Rome

British tourist regrets stealing “souvenir” in Rome last year.

A British tourist has mailed a stolen Roman cobblestone, or sampietrino, back to Rome in the hope that it could be returned to its rightful home near Piazza del Popolo.

The bubble-wrapped sampietrino, posted from the UK, arrived out of the blue at Il Piccolo wine bar on Via del Governo Vecchio. The surprise package was accompanied with an anonymous letter from the tourist who was overcome with remorse for the theft.

The note stated that the tourist stole the cobblestone "as a souvenir" while on holiday in Rome last year, requesting Il Piccolo to return it to the street between Piazza del Popolo and Pincio.
