Household rubbish in Rome will not be collected for 24 hours, starting with the early morning shift on Friday 27 January because of a strike by employees of AMA, the citys environmental agency.

Markets, hospitals, battery and pharmaceutical collections will not be affected but the citys street cleaning and its cemeteries and funeral services will. People are being asked not to pile their refuse in the streets, even if it is closed in the usual black sacks. At the return to work on Saturday 28 January there will be extra shifts to clear the previous day's rubbish as quickly as possible.
