The new director of the privately funded American Academy in Rome has been announced as Christopher Celenza, who is currently a professor in the department of German and Romance languages and literatures at Johns Hopkins University. He will succeed Professor Carmela Vircillo Franklin, who has spent five years in the post, in the summer of this year.

The American Academy offers its coveted annual Rome Prize scholarships to up to 30 fellows every year, to enable research in the fine arts and humanities. Celenza, who will be the academy’s 21st director, is a previous fellow and professes that his own time in Rome was life changing. “Chris Celenza will bring wonderful breadth and vigor to the role of director,” said academy president Adele Chatfield-Taylor. “This is the 115th year of the academy’s existence. When the 30 Rome Prize winners embark on their Roman adventure, they will find him an inspiring and stimulating presence.”
