Visitors to Rome’s city museums were up 10 per cent at the end of 2009 compared with 2008 to total over 1,450,000. The Capitoline Museums saw a 15 per cent increase to reach over 500,000 visitors. Figures at less popular museums such as the Planetarium and the Biopark were also up, as were those at so-called minor museums, such as the relative newcomer to the system, Carlo Bilotti, and the Centrale Montemartini on Via Ostiense, which is well off the usual tourist beat.
Much of the increase is attributed to better marketing, which included special exhibitions, longer opening hours, extra activities for children and occasional concerts.
There are 17 museums under the city administration. See the website for full list www.museiincomuneroma.it
