A naked, drunk man evaded security at St Peter’s Basilica and managed to ring a set of bells several times in the early hours of Wednesday 17 October.
The French man scaled scaffolding to get into the Arch of Bells, left of St Peter's Basilica.
The Arch of Bells is one of the official Vatican entrances, and therefore should always be under surveillance by Swiss Guards. It is currently undergoing restoration.
The man, who is thought to be homeless, was eventually stopped by guards and handed over to Italian authorities.
A Vatican spokesman said: ''He appeared to be in a confused state and looked as if he had been sleeping rough.''
